Street style has been a huge fashion trend around the world for decades, and more and more people are dressing according to their own taste and personalities, breaking all boundaries. GroundUp visited some Cape Town townships and busy areas around the city to see what people were wearing on the streets.
Chez Black, a model from Gugulethu, goes summery in denim shorts and a sleeveless tee. She puts some edge into her look with a navy bandana and coloured lens sunglasses.
Moses Stuurman and Michelle Perkins from Athlone rock the 80s street style, with Stuurman wearing a trenchcoat, jeans, a white tee and ankle work boots. Perkins goes bright with a 80s hip-hop styled windbreaker, torn jeans and sneakers. They both finish of their looks with funky hairstyles and shades.
Spotted coming from a traditional ceremony is traditional healer Jongilanga Ntabazalile from Mfuleni. He is donned in umbhaco, a Xhosa attire. He finishes off his look in traditional beads and mixes it up with a black fedora hat.
Lerato Maduna originally from Johannesburg, but studying in Cape Town, shows what simplicity is about in street style with her trench coat, figure hugging red maxi dress, black stockings and white takkies.
Mulewa Mrhaji, who sells sweets at the Salt River train station, goes all white in a suit and shirt. He matches his look with a white poor boy cap and accessories with little red hearts.
Nomvuseko Shuping from Mfuleni goes boho-chic, a style which mixes bohemian and hippie fashion, in a printed two piece knotted crop top and skirt. She pairs her summer outfit with the very popular fedora hat and nerd glasses.
Thandiwe Bonga from Nyanga keeps it vintage with a pencil skirt, a jersey top, wedge sandals and a blue collarless jacket. She sophisticates her style with a skinny belt.
