University of Witwatersrand (WITS) students have been protesting since yesterday when Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education, announced that universities could implement a fee increase of up to 8% for the 2017 academic year. Students are demanding free education.

Students threw rocks at the private security guards.

A student fires a fire extinguisher during the protest. Some students raised their hands and called for calm while others ran for cover.
